OEKC Round 1 – Rye House
March 16th 2014
Today was the start of the season for our OEKC senior team. We were hoping to start a new chapter this year and put our dreadful 2013 season behind us.
We put a brand new Formula K Kart on track with a setup we had been working with over the winter. This proved to be a step forward as the kart felt faster, well balanced and had more grip than previous years. We went 6 tenths quicker than anyone in qualifying and took our familiar position at the front of the grid in pole position.
As the race started, we felt our 2013 season was continuing when we got tangled with another competitor who out-braked themselves on lap 2. We ended that encounter with a great deal of crash damage resulting in a bent chassis, steering column and stub axle.
We recovered the kart back to the pits and quickly worked on making it drivable. We lost far too much time to challenge for positions today and ended 19/25. The frustration came when we realised we had set the second quickest lap time of the day with a bent vehicle.
Another opportunity missed.
